A white underbase can look perfect when it leaves the platen and still fail after the first wash. In many cases, the problem started before the garment ever reached the printer. For shops printing dark shirts, pretreatment is not an optional extra step. It is part of the production process that determines opacity, color brightness, hand feel, wash durability, and reprint rates. Apply it consistently, and the artwork has a stable surface to print on. Apply it poorly, and even a well-maintained machine can produce weak, patchy, or washed-out results.
What Is DTG Pretreatment and What Does It Do?
DTG pretreatment is typically sprayed onto the print area of a garment, then pressed or cured according to the chemistry's instructions. It prepares the fibers to receive white ink. Without that prepared surface, white ink can sink too deeply into the fabric, spread unevenly, or fail to form the solid foundation needed for color ink printed above it.
On dark garments, the white underbase is doing most of the heavy lifting. It gives the top colors a bright background, much like printing color on white paper instead of gray cardboard. Pretreatment helps that underbase remain more visible at the surface of the fabric rather than disappearing into the fibers.
The benefits are practical: stronger white opacity, sharper artwork, brighter colors, more consistent washes, and fewer shirts pulled from the line for quality issues. It also helps shops control the variables that can otherwise turn a repeat order into a production headache.
When Pretreatment Is Necessary
Pretreatment is most commonly required when printing white ink on black, navy, red, and other dark garments. It is also generally needed for light garments when the design includes a white underbase or white artwork.
A color-only print on a white or very light shirt may not require pretreatment, depending on the ink system, garment, and desired finish. That does not mean every light-garment job should be handled the same way. Ring-spun cotton, heavier cotton, cotton-poly blends, and performance fabrics can all accept ink differently.
Fabric composition matters as much as garment color. High-polyester blends can introduce dye migration or adhesion challenges, while fabric softeners, water repellents, and inconsistent garment finishing can affect how pretreatment lays down. Run a wash test before committing a new blank to a production run, especially for a customer reorder.
The Pretreatment Process That Produces Consistent Results
Good DTG pretreatment starts with a clean, flat garment. Lint, wrinkles, moisture, and seams in the print area can all cause uneven coverage. Load the shirt smoothly, use a lint roller when needed, and keep the printable area free of contamination.
Apply the pretreatment evenly across the full print zone, not only the visible edges of the design. The goal is controlled, uniform coverage. A properly maintained pretreatment machine is the most reliable way to achieve repeatable results, but manual application can work for low-volume jobs when the operator is consistent.
After spraying, press the garment to dry and flatten the treated area. Follow the product instructions for temperature, time, and pressure. Too little pressing can leave excess moisture that affects ink laydown. Too much heat or pressure can scorch the garment, create shine, or weaken the treated surface.
The print should go onto a dry, smooth pretreatment area. After printing, cure the garment using the ink and pretreatment requirements for that workflow. Pretreatment, ink, press settings, garment type, and curing method work as a system. Changing one variable without testing can change the final result.
How Much Pretreatment Should You Apply?
More pretreatment is not better. Overapplication can create a stiff hand feel, visible rectangles, staining, crystallization, or excess residue around the image. Underapplication can lead to poor white coverage, dull colors, and weak wash performance.
The right amount depends on the garment, artwork size, white ink load, and chemistry being used. A large, solid white graphic usually needs more coverage than a small design with limited white. Build repeatable settings for your common blanks and document them. That record saves time when different operators are running the same job.
Common DTG Pretreatment Problems
If white ink looks grainy, transparent, or uneven, first check whether the pretreatment coverage is uniform and fully dried. If the garment shows a box around the print, reduce coverage, improve spray consistency, or adjust pressing technique. If ink adhesion is poor after washing, review both pretreatment application and final curing.
Pretreatment can also settle in storage. Shake or mix it as directed before use, keep containers properly sealed, and do not assume yesterday's settings will perform the same after a change in garment style, shop humidity, or workflow.
