Knowing how to choose DTG ink means looking beyond the bottle price and matching the ink system to your equipment, garments, workflow, and actual production demands.

For a shop printing a few custom orders each week, one set of priorities may make sense. For an operation running daily batches of dark garments, repeat orders, and tight ship dates, consistency and serviceability carry far more weight. The right ink should support profitable output, not create a new variable for your operator to troubleshoot.

Start With Printer Compatibility

Compatibility comes first because DTG ink is part of a system, not an interchangeable commodity. Your printer’s ink delivery path, dampers, lines, cap station, pump, print head, firmware settings, and maintenance routine all influence how an ink performs. A formula that looks like a bargain can become expensive if it causes settling, inconsistent flow, nozzle loss, or cleaning cycles that eat into production time.

Before buying, confirm that the ink is intended for your exact printer configuration and the ink family currently in the machine. If you are replacing an existing ink, do not assume that matching the color label is enough. Ink chemistry can differ in viscosity, pigment load, white-ink behavior, curing requirements, and cleaning solution compatibility.

A dependable white ink should lay down an even base, support bright color on top, and remain manageable with proper daily circulation and agitation. It still requires routine attention. No DTG white ink eliminates the need for maintenance. What matters is whether the ink fits a disciplined workflow that includes daily checks, proper storage, scheduled circulation, and prompt cleaning when the printer sits idle.

Blended garments require realistic expectations. Higher polyester content can increase the risk of dye migration, especially on red, maroon, navy, and other heavily dyed blanks. Ink alone does not solve that issue. Your garment choice, pretreatment, print settings, and curing process must work together. Test the complete combination before promising a customer a large run.

Treat White Ink as a Production Decision

Many shops compare ink costs by the liter, then overlook the real expense of weak white performance. If the underbase needs extra passes, more ink, slower print modes, or repeated maintenance, the lower bottle price is no longer lower.

Assess white ink by what it does on the garments you sell most often. Print a dark cotton shirt, a fleece item, and a garment with fine white detail. Check opacity immediately after printing, after curing, and after washing. Pay attention to edge sharpness and whether color artwork stays bright over the base.

DTG results are not created by ink alone. Pretreatment controls how the ink sits on the garment, how clean the white base looks, and how well the print holds up after laundering. Curing determines whether that printed image becomes a durable finished product or a return waiting to happen.

Shaking or agitating white ink correctly before use is a simple habit that prevents a lot of preventable frustration.
